The TOSTA-band an international collaboration

We are very happy to present the members of the TOSTA-band to you; an international collaboration full of music! From each of the seven TOSTA-regions there is one band member. Together they are playing at each TOSTA festival organised in all the participating regions. Meet the band!

From Fryslân: Marit Talens

Marit Talens (20) is sjongeres, hikke en tein yn Marsum, op it stuit wenjend yn Arnhem fanwege har stúdzje oan it Jazz & Pop Konservatoarium. Sûnt de tiid dat sy rinne en prate koe, dûnse en song se en fanôf de middelbare skoalle wie sy frontfrou by ferskate bands, meastentiids yn it rock, soul en pop genre. Letter begûn sy har ek ta te lizzen op it singer- songwriterskip, wat har nei it winnen fan it Fryske songfestival Liet yn 2015 opsmiet dat sy yn desimber fan dat jier yn Itaalje optrede mocht op it Minderheidstalenfestival Suns-Europe, dêr’t sy twadde waard.


From Ireland: Caoimhín Ó Fearghail

Is ón Rinn i nGaeltacht na nDéise do Chaoimhín Ó Fearghail. Thosnaigh sé ag foghlaim na feadóige nuair a bhí sé ocht mbliana d’aois agus ba ghairid ina dhiaidh sin gur thosnaigh sé ar na píb uilleann. Mhúin sé an fheadóg mhór, an giotár, agus an bouzouki dó fhéin don chuid is mó agus chuaigh ceoltóirí agus amhránaithe a cheantair féin go mór i bhfeidhm air chomh maith le tionchar mórán ceol taifeadta agus mór-cheoltóirí an cheoil traidisíúnta. Tá sé le cloisint ar roinnt taifeadtaí le blianta beaga anuas, ina measc san Lá ag Ól Uisce lena dheartháir Seán ar an bhfidil agus an boscadóir Tomás Ó Gealbháin. Seinneann sé go minic sa mbaile agus thar lear, ina aonar agus le grúpaí cosúil le Danú agus Caladh Nua. Tá sé mar bhall anois den ngrúpa Caladh Nua chomh maith. B’é a fuair Gradam Ceoil TG4 sa bhliain 2012 do ‘Ceoltóir Óg na Bliana’.

 

From Wales: Gwilym Bowen Rhys

Mae Gwilym Bowen Rhys yn ganwr gwerin 23 oed o Fethel yn Arfon. Mae wedi canu mewn amryw o grwpiau Cymraeg ond mae bellach yn canolbwyntio ar berfformio caneuon gwerin ei wlad a hybu’r traddodiad yng Nghymru a thu hwnt.

 

 

From Galicia: Mónica de Nut

Mónica de Nut canta ópera, jazz, música de raíz, música experimental. Ten experiencia na interpretación teatral e na danza contemporánea. Formouse no canto lírico licenciándose na Escuela Superior de canto de Madrid e tamén na música tradicional galega e no jazz. Despois do éxito do seu primeiro disco Mónica de nut Trio, está a presentar o seu novo traballo Dos fios invisibles chegan as cores.

From Scotland: Rona Wilkie

‘S e fìdhleadar agus seinneadar à Gàidhealtachd na h-Alba a th’ann an Rona Wilkie. Bhuainnich i BBC Alba Neachd-Ciùil Òg ann an 2012, agus bho sin tha i air a bhith aig an fhior thoiseach de cheòl na fìdhle ann an Alba. Tha i a’ cuir fidheal agus seinn còmhla airson sealladh ùr a thoirt dhan tradisean Gàidhealach. A-nis tha Rona a’ toirt an tradisean gu còmhlanan le ceòlaidearan bho diofar àiteanan.

 

From the Basque Country: Oreka TX

Oreka TX_ PAS Festival
The TOSTA-band will be represented by various members of the international famous band Oreka TX. Txalaparta’s sound has been travelling around the world since 1997 when the group joined up Kepa Junkera’s band. From then onwards, they have shared the stage with countless artists such as Carlos Nuñez, La Bottine Souriante, Aziza Brahim, Taraf de Haidouks, Dulce Pontes, Phil Cunningham, Manu Dibango and Pat Metheny. they have also experimented with other disciplines like dance, poetry, cinema and visual arts.

Oreka TX takes the instruments from the country to the urban sorroundings without making it lose its true nature, currently offering a renewed and strong, ancient and modern, traditional and innovative txalaparta which plays with materials as stone and wood.

From Fryslân: Marit Talens
Marit Talens is a 20 year old singer from Fryslân, born and raised in Marsum, currently living in Arnhem on the other side of the Netherlands for her study at the Jazz & Pop conservatory. Ever since she could walk and talk she has been dancing and singing and since her highschool time she has been performing with bands, mainly in the rock, soul and pop genre. Later on she also started to get serious in the singersongwriter business, which gave her the opportunity to perform at the minoritylanguages songfestival SUNS-Europe last year where she won second place after winning the Frisian songfestival Liet.

 

From Ireland: Caoimhín Ó Fearghail
Caoimhín Ó Fearghail comes from An Rinn in the west Waterford ‘Gaeltacht’ or Irish speaking area of Ireland. He started to learn the tin-whistle at the age of eight and quickly progressed to the uilleann pipes. He is also self-taught on flute, guitar and bouzouki and is influenced by the many great musicians and singers from his home area as well as many commercially recorded artists and greats of Irish music. He has featured on a number of albums in the last few years playing various instruments, including Lá ag Ól Uisce, with his brother Seán, a fiddler, and accordionist Tomás Ó Gealbháin. He has performed frequently at home and abroad, solo and also with groups like Danú and Caladh Nua, the latter of which he is now a member of. He was the 2012 recipient of the TG4 Young Musician of the Year award (Gradam Ceoil TG4).

 

From Wales: Gwilym Bowen Rhys
Gwilym Bowen Rhys is a 23 year old folk singer from North-West Wales, Welsh is his first language and he has performed in many Welsh language bands. He is passionate about his country’s rich musical heritage and about promoting it within Wales and Further afield.

 

From Galicia: Mónica de nut
Mónica de nut sings opera, jazz, traditional music, experimental music. She’s got experience in theatrical acting and contemporary dance. She was trained in lyrical singing, graduating in the Escuela Superior de Voz de Madrid, as well as in Galician traditional singing, contemporary music and jazz. After the success of her first album Mónica de nut Trío, she has just released Dos Fios Invisibles Chegan as Cores.

 

From Cornwall: Bec Applebee
Bec Applebee is an engaging and astonishingly versatile performer. She is respected equally as a musician and physical theatre actor and director. Bec has worked with internationally acclaimed companies such as Goldentree productions, Kneehigh theatre, Wild Works and she also makes her makes and performs her own work (“Oh Mary”, The Ugly Sisters) Bec is a founder member of Dalla who are the internationally acclaimed leading lights of Cornish traditional music. The members of Dalla are some of the foremost proponents of traditional Cornish music today. They have been on a journey from the earliest sparks of the revival in Cornish Traditional Music to the exuberantly expanding universe of the scene today.

 

From Scotland: Rona Wilkie
Rona Wilkie is a fiddle player and Gaelic singer from Argyll. Having been crowned BBC Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year in 2012, Rona has gone onto prove herself at the forefront of the Scottish fiddle scene. She combines voice and fiddle to create a new exciting perspective on Highland music, and has pushed the boundaries for fusion, combining her home tradition with many musicians from across the world.

The TOSTA-band will be represented by various members of the international famous band Oreka TX. Oreka TX has been able to take their instrument from the country world to the urban sorroundings without making it loose its truly nature, currently offering a renewed and strong, ancient and modern, traditional and innovative txalaparta wich playins with materials as stone and wood.

Their new album SILEX gathers part of the repertoire created along these last years and is focused on the sonority of the stone txalaparta. Likewise, it counts on the collaboration of Kalakan trio, Alos Quartet and We are Standard. The album has been awarded as the best basque album by the Independent Phongraphic Union (UFi).
